Corporate History

Photo of John James HospitalFor the 40 years from its incorporation in 1966, through until October 2006, the John James Foundation built, expanded and operated, on a not-for-profit basis Canberra's largest private hospital in Deakin, ACT.  However with increasing financial pressures in the years leading up to 2006, brought about by many factors including the rapidly changing nature of the healthcare industry, it became uneconomic for the John James Foundation to continue to operate the hospital.

The hospital business (excluding the land and buildings) was sold in October 2006 to Calvary Private Healthcare Canberra Limited and has become part of the group of hospitals run by Little Company of Mary Health Care.  The John James Foundation continues to own all of the hospital and clinical land and buildings, now known as the John James Healthcare Campus, at 173 Strickland Crescent in Deakin.  The hospital buildings are leased, on a long term basis, to Calvary Private Healthcare Canberra Ltd.

Structure

The John James Foundation is a company limited by guarantee and being recognised as a Health Promotion Charity by the Australian Taxation Office, is a tax free not-for-profit charity and a deductible gift recipient.  It has approximately 130 Specialist Medical Practitioner members and a Board of nine consisting of a majority of Specialist Members.  The John James Foundation currently has a small dedicated staff and its offices are located in the Clinical Services Building on the John James Healthcare Campus in Strickland Crescent, Deakin in the Australian Capital Territory.

The company was known as The John James Memorial Hospital Ltd until 20 June 2007, when it changed its name to John James Memorial Foundation Ltd, in order to better reflect its future activities.  The John James Foundation also adopted a new company Constitution with effect from 12 June 2007, which gives it a broad charter to undertake charitable activities within the health care area.

Future Operations

Photo of John James HospitalGiven the Specialist medical membership of the John James Foundation and its prior activity and expertise, the Board and Management in consultation with the membership have determined the future activities of the John James Foundation should all be linked back to the goal of providing, on a charitable basis, Specialist medical facilities, services and equipment.

To this end the current focus of the John James Foundation's national programs is in rural and remote health, where there is a clearly identified shortage of Specialist health services and in the local Canberra region, the ongoing success and provision of high quality Specialist health care to the community by the Calvary John James Hospital.

Through a range of public and private partnerships, the use of our skills and financial resources and with the generous support of our Specialist members, the John James Foundation is in a unique position to assist, on a charitable basis, with the need for Specialist health services and facilities in the Australian community.

Financial Position & Donations

The John James Foundation has as its major assets the John James Healthcare Campus at 173 Strickland Crescent, Deakin, ACT and an adjoining property at 63 Denison Street, Deakin ACT.  These properties provide a solid income stream from a number of mostly medical tenants that will ensure the long term future of the John James Foundation and its charitable operations.
